This is a 16-week evening course (2 hours per week) introducing
the major systems of thought of East and West.
Timeless and Universal Philosophy
The need for a renewal of philosophy. The value of philosophy for science, art, politics and religion. What is the nature of the human being? The seven principles in nature and in man.
India
The Bhagavad Gita: The inner battle we have to fight. The Eastern doctrines of reincarnation, karma and dharma. The different paths of yoga and the art of right action.
Tibet
H. P. Blavatsky and "The Voice of the Silence". Selected passages from an original Tibetan text. Description of stages on the inward journey.
Buddhism
The story of Buddha's life. Key elements of his teachings: The four noble truths and the noble eightfold path. Is liberation from pain and suffering possible?
China
The sayings of Confucius and their relevance today. Confucius and Lao Tzu. Jun-zi: the ideal of self-development and service to others.
Egypt
Land of enigmas. The pyramid as a symbol of man and society. The moral teachings of Ptahotep, Kagemni, Imhotep, Merikare and others.
Greece
The classical concepts of individual, society and state. The idea of justice. What is politics? Plato's Republic: The myth of the cave and the idea of the philosopher king. The five types of government.
Rome
The Roman Stoics: The philosopher's contribution to society. Practical wisdom from Seneca, Epictetus and the emperor Marcus Aurelius.
Western Mysticism

The Human Being and the Universe

The Hermetic Tradition
The perennial philosophy and its exponents in history. The forgotten sciences of astrology, alchemy and yoga.
